Reseller hosting is a commonly used generic term that can in fact be used with several different types of web hosting. The term doesn’t refer to web hosting plans as much as it does the company you are purchasing your plan from.
A Hosting Reseller purchases a larger Web Hosting account from a Web Hosting company, and in turn sells portions of their account to their own customers. They are more or less mimicking the services that are usually offered from web hosting companies but they are eliminating some of the expensive overhead that usually comes with running one of these large companies. This kind of Web Hosting is popular with, for example, start-up Web Hosting businesses, companies with a large portfolio of sites, and Web Design companies wanting to offer Hosting to their clients.
A Reseller Host may offer deals on Shared, Dedicated or VPS space (this is further discussed in part 2.) Because web hosting resellers tend to buy their own hosting an discounted prices, these savings are often passed along to their own customers. One of the things that can be disadvantageous about the arrangement is that the reseller is also a customer of the larger hosting company so various technical issues can arise. The more advanced the Hosting they are offering, the more support the Reseller can give you directly – but as a customer of a Reseller, it is possible that you will contact the Reseller about a technical fault, who will then in turn have to contact his or her Hosting company.
Dave will only find reseller hosting to be useful if he figures out that he can sell hosting services to other people or if he thinks he can expand his portfolio of sites. If Dave does not intend to do one or the other of these tasks, he should most likely stay with Shared Hosting. This is the most popular kind of Hosting and one that will provide him with the benefits he needs.
At the present, though, it is a good alternative if they have only a single site but are interested in having more control over the performance of the site since it is getting too busy, or if there are some elaborate redesigns forthcoming.
