Reseller Hosting Versus VPS

July 9th, 2010 by Logan Oulman

A ‘reseller host’ is a phrase which refers to multiple types of hosting on the internet. It isn’t a definition of the kind of Web Hosting on offer, as such, as the kind of person offering it.

A ‘Hosting Reseller’ will buy a sizable account from a particular web hosting business, and in turn, this reseller will sell parts of this account to customers of their own. They are more or less mimicking the services that are usually offered from web hosting companies but they are eliminating some of the expensive overhead that usually comes with running one of these large companies. This is a business model that is common with a couple of different types of companies, most usually web design companies that want to offer hosting as a bundle to their clients, start up web hosts, and also companies that are building a very large portfolio.

Most hosting resellers offer VPS, shared, or dedicated solutions to customers (See part two). Customers of the reseller will often find their hosting services to be cheaper because the reseller has bought web space in bulk from the larger hosting company. The only major drawback with Reseller Hosting is that the Reseller is also a customer of the company they have bought their Hosting off of in the first place. If you purchase an advanced hosting solution, it becomes more likely that a reseller can support your issues directly, though most issues which arise when hosting through a reseller need to be reported to the original hosting company by your reseller, even after you report it to them.

For instance, Reseller Hosting will only be beneficial to Dave if he chooses to offer Hosting to his customers, or if he wants to grow his company by having a portfolio full of websites. If Dave does not intend to do one or the other of these tasks, he should most likely stay with Shared Hosting. This is the most popular kind of Hosting and one that will provide him with the benefits he needs.

At the present, though, it is a good alternative if they have only a single site but are interested in having more control over the performance of the site since it is getting too busy, or if there are some elaborate redesigns forthcoming.
