The term reseller hosting is a somewhat generic one that is loosely applied to a few different kinds of web hosting. The term doesn’t refer to web hosting plans as much as it does the company you are purchasing your plan from.
A hosting reseller is someone that purchases large accounts from web hosting companies and then will try and turn around the web space and sell it to their own customers. Basically, they offer the services offered by a Web Hosting business, but they are not required to develop and pay for the costly hardware, and they do not have to take care of it either. This is a business model that is common with a couple of different types of companies, most usually web design companies that want to offer hosting as a bundle to their clients, start up web hosts, and also companies that are building a very large portfolio.
There are three kinds of Hosting Resellers that are discussed in part 2. They are Dedicated, Shared, or VPS solutions. For the most part, customers of resellers will be able to procure cheaper hosting services because the reseller will purchase the space in bulk at a discount. The primary downfall of purchasing hosting from a reseller is the fact that your hosting company is beholden to the company which actually provides the hosting space. If you purchase an advanced hosting solution, it becomes more likely that a reseller can support your issues directly, though most issues which arise when hosting through a reseller need to be reported to the original hosting company by your reseller, even after you report it to them.
Reseller Hosting is only of use to Dave if he decides to sell Hosting to other people, or expand his business with a large portfolio of other sites. If they are not looking to venture into either one of these departments, they might wish to remain using shared hosting since it is a more commonly used brand of hosting and will therefore be the most useful for them.
For now though, Dave thinks he is happy with a single site, he would just prefer to have more control and performance as his site is getting quite busy and he has a few demanding redesign plans in mind.
