I recently had to shop around for a web host. Locating a good quality web hosting company turned out to be a bigger headache than I first imagined. It took me weeks before I found a host I was completely happy with. And I probably signed up then cancelled services with a half dozen hosts during my long search.
In searching for a top web hosting service, there are only a handful of things I really look for. First, I look for plenty of disk space and data transfer, along with a feature rich hosting plan. This is probably the criteria that is most easy to meet as many hosts are competing fiercely with each other and offering unlimited diskspace and bandwidth.
The next item on my list of criteria is a decent control panel. I should be able to install WordPress and install databases relatively easily. I like having some ecommerce capabilities as well so I can sell things if I want to. PHP support is a given. I use PHP to add features and scripts to my pages, so it’s a must as far as I’m concerned.
Lastly, I look for a host that offers excellent technical support. Unfortunately, support is not very impressive at most hosting companies. Don’t assume that just because a host has 24/7 toll free support, you will get good service. I have sometimes been put on hold for a half hour when I called these numbers. It can also be a crap shoot on how helpful the representative you talk to is.
So how can you find the top web hosting services? Some sites out there are dedicated to reviewing and ranking hosting companies, and that is often a good place to start. I like to look at these sites, then try out the highly rated hosts that offer a 30 day moneyback guarantee. This makes it easy for me to move onto another host if I am not happy.
Even if you are diligent about it, finding a decent web host can be a challenge. However, by researching hosts at review sites and being a bit patient, you should eventually find a web host that you are satisfied with.
