Everyday, there are thousands of webmasters everyday registering new domain names. The idea that comes across most people when valuating a domain name, is if it is a popular phrase that everyone wants. There are many aspects that determines a domain’s value and here, I’ll discuss a few. If you know these by heart, there is no need to hire a domain appraiser as you already know the foundation of what makes a domain name valuable.
Domain Valuation
The value of a domain is a combination of entities and not just one particular factor. Finding the true value of a domain name should always be valuated by the owner.
- For the most part, the first objective you would look for when valuating a domain name is if the domain ends with the popular .com extension. Since .com is the most widely used domain extension and not to say the most prominent extension, finding good domain names with this extension is very limited; reason why most of the time, they are worth more than the regular .org, .net, or .info.
- The second observation is to decide if the domain name sounds memorable and just rolls off the tongue after the first time hearing it. Many webmasters would pay additional amounts for a domain name that is both easy to remember and easy to comprehend. Memorable domains that fits the theme of the website is a bonus.
- Domain age is a big factor when it comes to search engine optimization; reason why most domain buyers, love older domains than the simple domain names that were registered yesterday. Domains that were registered longer, most of the time, are of more value.
- The fourth and foremost observation is to see if the domain name has a certain phrase that is highly searched in the search engines. A good tool to see if a domain has this advantage, is to use Google’s Keyword Tool. If it has this advantage over a phrase that gets over 20,000 monthly searches, you know you have hit the jackpot especially if you got the domain in the .com extension.
- Domain has Google Page Rank. If a domain has a higher page rank, the more valuable it is to domain buyers. You can check your domain Page Rank here.
- If it is a 3 letter domain or lower, it is entitled to be worth a lot if it is registered with a .com extension. Reason being is that, all 2-3 letter domain names under the .com extension are fully registered. If you ever happen to obtain one, it can be sold in the thousands. It is just that valuable since it is a limited online treasure.
- Holds modern keywords. If your domain holds two modern keywords conjoined together, for example MoneyBlog, you can already essentially know that this is a domain that has great value, as it holds the exact keywords on what the theme is literally about. If you can find a online worded keyword domain, like Money, that of course would be worth more but that is a very rare occasion like finding 2-3 letter domain names for sale.
- How many keywords or words are embedded within the domain name. Ideally, the shorter the better. If you can get a good domain name that is two worded, it is always better than the three worded domain about 99% of the time.
- If it is after a popular product. For example, if you were to obtain a domain name over a popular product, like lets say, Apple I-pods, you can literally bet that your domain name is going to be worth grands. I’m talking about domains like I-pods.com, Ipods.com, you get the idea.
As you can see, there are many aspects to how valuable a domain name is. As long as a domain name has potential and fits under at least 3-4 of these categories, you can bet that it is at least worth something reasonable. If ever to obtain a short domain name with a .com extension, you can bet that it is worth literally grands. Valuing a domain, is a combination of things, rather not just one.
