Home Based Business – Buying And Selling Expired Domains

July 1st, 2010 by Brian Lett

There are those who say that you can no longer make a home based business out of flipping expired domain names. Flipping expired domain names involves buying a domain name at one price, and selling it at a higher price for a profit. My opinion is that they can keep thinking that way. The fact of the matter is that domain flipping has had a great past, which will continue on into the future. Buy low and sell high. That is the name of this game.

Many entrepreneurs fail to recognize the impact that the recession has had on home based business. In particular, home business is something that a lot of individuals who lost their jobs turned to as an option to replace their income. Unfortunately, many of these individuals fell prey to the unrealistic notion that there are a whole series of hundred dollar bills printed out specifically for those who wish to get rich overnight on the internet. Such individuals paid top dollar for domain names which they thought would bring loads of buyers with their credit cards in hand. When they realize that this was not the case, they gave up on their notion, and allowed their domain names to expire. This is where you, the domain flipper, come in and purchase a valuable domain name for next to nothing.

On the other side of the coin, “The Great Recession” had a detrimental effect on many existing home based business owners. Many individuals who relied on their full-time income to market their business until it became profitable, lost their means of steady income, and as a result had to cut expenses. The first thing to go for many of these individuals was their home business, along with the attached domain name. While the situation is unfortunate, one person’s misery is another one’s pleasure. So long as you did not cause the individual to become laid off from their job, there is no shame in sweeping in and taking the domain name which they had abandoned.

While many people claim that the internet has become saturated, I tend to disagree. The fact of the matter is that the internet is still extremely young, and has not hit full stride in every corner of the world. As such, certain countries have yet to experience the dot (com) boom which was experienced in the United States a decade ago. Such emerging markets are being targeted by many in this industry who feel that a fortune is to be had in the near future.

Nevertheless, I am in the camp which believes that the field of domain flipping has yet to reach its apex. If you are in search of a home based business, this is a field that you should give at least some consideration to. Believe it or not, individuals have made a fortune with domain flipping. Yes, there is a lot of work involved. However, this fact is absolutely no different than what is required of any other home based business.
